I always get excited when a local restaurant opens that isn’t Italian or Indian, as is usually the case near where I live. Tas opened last year and serves authentic Turkish cuisine, and the best bit — it has a real clay oven/tandoor call it what you like, right there on the premises! The decor is simple but effective with pretty light fixtures and pictures. On to the food…
Best Dish: Hot Mezze Platter. A variety of yummy starters, cheese borek, halloumi, falafel..a dish of gorgeousness, you can’t go wrong with this. So satisfying and filling.
Recommended: Mixed Grill. A bit of everything, shish taouk, lamb chop, lamb kofta and shawarma, brilliant if you can’t decide what to order! The portion sizes are huge, as the meat is served with salad, rice and bread. I would share one with somebody else next time.
Disappointing: Lamb chops, bit too much gristle for my liking and a tad bland.
Surprisingly Nice: Complimentary Bread. Freshly baked in front of you — this is certainly the highlight of this local restaurant — and it comes with some super tasty dips.
Service: Very friendly and accommodating to our party which consisted of my three children.
I would come here again just for the bread. In fact I can’t wait to go again and try some of the Turkish pizzas or house specialties. The kids were happy too as they had their own menu where ice cream was included. The kids menu is £4.99 so really good value for money, the choices being a beef burger, chicken or fish fingers with chips so not hugely exciting or healthy but if you get to eat in peace then who cares right?
I really liked Tas, it really felt like I was sitting in local restaurant in Istanbul, authentic Turkish cuisine and hospitality right in the middle of Surrey! You can’t ask for much more than that!
