Breakfast at Nopi — Soho, London
When you’re meeting a friend from the opposite side of London, it needs to be special. And what is more special than Yotam Ottolenghi’s restaurants? Not much else is the answer!
Nopi is tucked away on Warwick Street in Soho very near to Liberty. We arrived in Nopi just before 11am without booking a table and were given a small space for two in the corner. The back more spacious part of Nopi was empty and at first we were wondering why we weren’t seated there. Then we found out after 12pm that those tables were all booked for lunch. As lunchtime started the place got filled up very quickly.
The decor in Nopi is quite simple and airy with wooden tables, metallic gold lights and cream walls. Lunch is usually the thing people come for as they have beautiful colourful salads on display. Maybe next time!
The breakfast menu isn’t huge but there are some interesting options like the shakshuka or black rice pudding which I had for the first time in Bali, and loved. After much deliberation I ordered the sweet option (because I can’t help myself) of French toast with star anise sugar, berry compote, orange yoghurt (£9.90) and my friend ordered the healthier option of scrambled eggs on sourdough with salmon (£9.90).
At first I thought the star anise sugar was a bit strong but with the yogurt and fruity compote the flavours balanced out. The portions are huge (four thick triangular pieces) so I must admit I couldn’t finish mine. The eggs and salmon were tasty and fresh but I’m not big on sourdough so I wouldn’t order this, but it is a solid breakfast dish. As you can see presentation was on point.
For drinks we ordered the fresh carrot, ginger and apple juice (£3.90) and a kale, cucumber, apple and lime juice (£4.90). After tasting my green juice I didn’t really like it so I swapped it with my friend who preferred it to the carrot juice. That worked out well!
All in all an extremely filling breakfast — walking around the surrounding streets are perfect to work off everything you’ve just eaten.
