My First Escape Room Experience — HintHunt London

A few friends had been mentioning escape rooms to me recently but I just thought ‘Pahhh sounds weird’. However after doing a bit of research I realised this could be quite a fun activity! So I booked a game at HintHunt for myself and two of my closest friends.

What’s an Escape Room?

An Escape room is a room full of puzzles, locks and mysteries which you have to solve to ‘escape’ from the room. One hour is given and the room will not be opened until you solve all the puzzles. Obviously if you fail, they will let you out after the hour. Usually a team of 3-5 people is needed but other escape rooms may have slightly different rules.

HintHunt London

HintHunt has two escape rooms to choose from — JM’s Office and the Zen room. We were booked in for JM’s Office which is based around a murder mystery. Our booking was at 11.30 and we arrived at 11. We were sent away as they’d just opened and weren’t ready!  Anyhow we loitered in the rain and returned about 11.20. They explained some basic instructions to us and we were then led down a steep outdoor stairwell down to a different room. One dedicated staff member was allocated to watch us via a camera the whole time so they can give us onscreen hints on a monitor to help us solve things. The game cannot be solved without the hints! Hence the name HintHunt….

I can’t give much away otherwise it will ruin it for you but the whole experience involved a lot of searching for things, working out puzzles and using your brain a lot. Despite all the ‘doh!’ Homer Simpson moments, we unbelievably managed to escape with only a few seconds remaining! Only 50% of players escape so we felt totally proud of ourselves. When you’re under time pressure, often your brain can’t comprehend the most obvious of things!!

I think 3-4 people is the right number to take part. 5 would be too many as it’s not a huge room but perhaps you’ll have more chance of escaping in time. We had the most awesome time playing as a team and were completely immersed in the game. If you’ve never been to an escape room I would strongly recommend HintHunt as I really can’t think of a better way to spend an hour!

I would love to take my 10 year old son too, he would love it!

Essential Info: Recommended for ages 9 and above. Open from 11.30am to 8.15pm. There are 3 identical murder mystery rooms so if you are a large/corporate group it’s ideal and even more fun to compete live against each other.

Cost: Starts from £17 per person, goes up if the group is smaller. See website for booking.

  • Great review. Very clear and informative. I would have liked to read a review like this before I went! Would have been a bit more clued in about what to expect and do. Your followers are lucky!

  • I’ve not heard of escape rooms before but sounds like a lot of fun…I love puzzles and murder mysteries so will def look into it for my next day out in london. Thanks for choosing to review!!

  • This is some really good information about escape rooms. My sister really wants to do one together soon. I liked that you explained that they will normally let you out after an hour if you can’t figure it out yourself.

  • I like where this type of activity is going because my family is a bunch of scatterbrains when solving problems. I think this will be a fun learning experience for the wife and kids. We will need an event specialist to help us out on our first Escape Room Experience.
