West Wittering Beach, West Sussex
Let’s face it, us Brits get very excited when the weather is set to rise above 23-24 degrees. It doesn’t happen often but when it does we all have the same idea — let’s head to the beach before it starts raining again!
I only discovered West Wittering last year when I was looking at the nearest beaches to London. It’s only about one hour and twenty minutes from South-West London, which is so doable for a last-minute day trip.
When we first visited I was blown away by the sandy beach and the sea. It’s so beautiful I was wondering how I missed out on this all my life. As a child we always went to Brighton or Little Hampton, as my parents did not know about West Wittering!
Getting to West Wittering Beach
Fast forward thirty years, seems like everyone knows about it. The first time we visited, on a warmish spring day, there were only a few families on the beach. The second time however, on May Bank Holiday was a different story! It took us about one hour and fifty minutes to get near to Wittering and another two hours on the road leading up to the beach car-park. It was insane and resulted in us eating our picnic in the car. So here’s a warning — please check the West Wittering Beach website, which gives fairly up-to-date information on traffic and the car-park situation. Also use a sat-nav with up to date traffic information. We learnt the hard way.
Once you get to the car-park (which is a massive twenty acre field) it’s a less than 100m walk to the beach. By the car-park are two toilet blocks, a fish and chip shop, a cafe and an ice cream vendor.
What to do in West Wittering
There are lovely coastal walks from West Wittering up to East Head which is conserved by the National Trust. If you’re facing the water, turn right and keep walking. It’s stunning and the kids will love the mini sand dunes on the way which are such a rarity in England. Otherwise stay on the beach and enjoy. The water is shallow for a long way out which makes it safe for really small children too.
There is a lot of space to play games on the sand, so definitely take a frisbee, ball, badminton or whatever else you like playing.
Cafe: No halal meat, but vegetarian sandwiches & cakes available. Closes at 4pm everyday. Fish & Chips shop open until late. BBQs allowed on the beach.
Prayer facilities: No private spaces, but you can pray on the beach of course.
